Design-Build Project
2025

More than just a lodging facility, this development transcends conventional accommodation, crafting an environment that seamlessly blends the comfort, warmth, and sense of belonging of a long stay home with the restorative amenities and aesthetic appeal of a boutique resort.

The architectural vision centers on creating a tranquil retreat fostering both individual renewal and a sense of shared belonging. Comprising three buildings that house 28 spacious guestrooms, the facility is sensitive to contextual integration and modern tropical aesthetics. Every detail is intentionally crafted, demonstrating that a budget-conscious approach can still achieve high design and exceptional detailing. The individual suites are envisioned as private havens, offering a genuine sense of "home" with carefully considered layouts that maximize natural light, cross-ventilation, and luxurious comfort, providing stunning views of the serene Vieques landscape.

Isla Nena suites locate in a government-owned industrial park, is approximately 1.3 miles (a 5-minute drive) from the new hospital.

Beyond the private living spaces, the design incorporates shared amenities reminiscent of a tranquil resort. A central courtyard, anchored by an inviting swimming pool, forms the social heart of the complex, providing residents with an immediate connection to leisure and relaxation, fostering a strong community feel. Other communal spaces, including a fitness center, laundry facilities, business center, and an outdoor kitchen, are meticulously designed to promote interaction while offering convenient, high-quality services. The architectural language embraces tropical modernism, utilizing breeze blocks for natural ventilation and a vibrant color palette drawn directly from the ocean's blues and corals, reflecting the island's natural beauty and embodying a calm, refreshing atmosphere.

Understanding Vieques' unique environment and logistical realities, Isla Nena suites was constructed with a focus on resilience and an aggressive schedule. Vieques' infrastructure development is significantly shaped by its island status; nearly all goods must be shipped from the main island of Puerto Rico via cargo ferry, a process that involves customs procedures and multiple transfers, adding to logistical complexities and costs, demanding meticulous planning and coordination.

The primary structural system combines precast concrete and structural steel, chosen for its durability, speed of erection, and inherent resilience against natural elements, crucial for an island environment. The project rigorously adheres to stringent code standards and incorporates advanced mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for reliable and efficient operation. Accessibility is paramount throughout the design, ensuring comfortable and convenient movement for all occupants.

Isla Nena suites is engineered for sustainable operation, minimizing its environmental footprint while maximizing resident well-being. This project aims to provide sustainable and resilient power for the entire island, including critical facilities like the Susana Centeno Hospital, which has been non-functional since hurricane Maria in 2017. Key sustainable features include solar water heaters, permeable pavers for effective stormwater management, and white roofs to reduce heat island effect and energy consumption.

All appliances and fixtures are selected for their energy efficiency and low water consumption, reflecting a deep commitment to responsible resource use. Comprehensive civil engineering, including detailed erosion and sedimentation control plans, demonstrates a responsible approach to site development, ensuring the project's longevity and minimal impact on the island's delicate ecosystem. This robust framework provides not just comfort, but also peace of mind, which is essential for those working in demanding healthcare roles.

Isla Nena suites represents a significant investment in the future of Vieques. It directly addresses a critical need for stable, appealing housing for the island's healthcare workforce. This strategic infrastructure project supports the recruitment and retention of skilled medical personnel, ensuring the long-term success of the new hospital and the health of the community it serves. It is more than an architectural endeavor; it is a commitment to the well-being of those who care for others, establishing a benchmark for purpose-driven design on Isla Nena.
